Chronic dry eye can become more than an occasional irritation. When the ocular surface remains inflamed or damaged, standard artificial tears may not provide enough support for lasting relief. At Eye Care Plus, we evaluate the underlying cause and severity of dry eye to determine when advanced healing options may be appropriate for our Amarillo patients.
Two regenerative approaches used for more persistent cases are amniotic membranes and platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, eye drops. While both are designed to support ocular surface healing, they work differently and may be recommended for different needs.
An amniotic membrane is a thin biological tissue placed over the surface of the eye. It acts as a temporary protective covering while providing an environment that supports corneal repair.
For patients with significant inflammation or ocular surface damage, an amniotic membrane can provide more intensive short-term treatment. Depending on the condition of the eye, it may be considered when other dry eye therapies have not provided enough improvement.
Amniotic membranes may be appropriate for patients experiencing:
• Persistent corneal irritation or inflammation
• Significant ocular surface damage
• Severe dry eye symptoms that have not improved with standard treatments
• A need for concentrated short-term healing support
Because the membrane is placed directly on the eye, our Amarillo dry eye team carefully evaluates the cornea and tear film before determining whether this treatment is appropriate.
PRP eye drops are created from a patient's own blood. The blood is processed to concentrate platelets and naturally occurring growth factors, which are then prepared as customized eye drops.
Rather than providing a temporary physical covering, PRP drops are used regularly at home to support the natural repair of the ocular surface. They may be considered for patients with chronic dry eye, persistent corneal irritation, or ocular surface problems that require ongoing regenerative support. PRP therapy can be especially useful when traditional lubricating drops are not adequately addressing the condition of the ocular surface.
The right option depends on what we find during your dry eye evaluation. Amniotic membranes generally provide concentrated treatment over a shorter period, while PRP drops offer ongoing biological support through repeated use.
In some cases, advanced regenerative therapies may also be incorporated into a broader dry eye treatment plan. We offer diagnostic testing and in-office dry eye treatments in Amarillo so we can address contributing factors rather than simply treating symptoms.
If burning, redness, fluctuating vision, or persistent irritation continues despite using eye drops, schedule a dry eye evaluation with Eye Care Plus. We can examine your ocular surface and determine which treatment approach best fits your needs.
